What I Did This Summer

aileen end of the summer get togetherPaul and I have had a busy summer season. We have the Villas to run, we have our horse farm and our beautiful horses. Then there is our families. Between all three, there is always something going on.

Aileen brazeau, san clemente villas, brazeau thoroughbred farms, aileen san clementeAs always, I do my best to stay fit and strong. When you are running a top-tier Senior Living Facility and you and your husband own a Thoroughbred Horse Farm where you train and breed horses for racing, you have a busy life. Being fit and strong is important.

Paul and I also love spending time with friends and family. As the years go by and we get older, those times get even more precious to both of us. aileen brazeau dinner party for family and friends

It is my hope that each of you have also had a great summer season, and that going forward into the holidays, you will be able to surround yourself with friends and family.

Summer Time in the O.C.

Aileen Brazeau, summertime in the OC, aileen Brazeau, owner of San Clemente Villas

If you have never been to South Orange County in the summer time, let me tell you that it’s not exactly what your might expect. You see, here in the Laguna Niguel, Dana Point, San Clemente area, the closer you get to the ocean, the cooler it gets in the summer. Our version of summer come in late September early October.

In June we have June Gloom, where it’s overcast for much of the day. Cool and damp and cooler at night. In July, as you drive toward the beach from inland, say Irvine or Costa Mesa, you can watch the digital thermometer in your car head steadily downwards. It can be in the low 90’s to 94 in Irvine, and as you head down the 5 freeway South, Laguna Hills will be in the low 90’s.

By the time you get to Crown Valley Parkway in Laguna Niguel, it will probably be in the high 80’s. If you jump off the freeway and head towards the Ocean on Golden Lantern, the temps will go down slowly at first, then once you hit Dana Point it can jump down almost 4 degrees into the mid 80’s. And by nightfall it my even get down into the 70’s.

Yes, there is still plenty of sunshine, but for us who live along the coast, the mornings have a cool foggy mist, mid day it gets warmer and by the evening it’s cool.

However, In September, when everyone inland in cooling off, we get HOT HOT HOT. So, if you are coming to visit friends and family, either come in July or August, or wait until October.

But do come. Orange County is a big place, with plenty of things to do, besides Disneyland and Knottsberry Farms that is. We have beaches, kayaking, hiking trails, some great restaurants and the Performing Arts Center.

The Importance of Communication

Today I want to write about communication. It seems to me to be something that needs to be addressed.

Communication is more than just talking. Communication is listening, comprehending and mirroring back what someone is telling you. It’s not simply listening and responding. These days it seems like people have lost the will, if not the ability, to communicate. They direct words at each other without ever giving thoughtful consideration to what the other person is trying to convey. That is not communicating. [Read more…]

Summer Time in San Clemente

aileen brazeau, san clemente ca business owner, san clemente villas, socialite, San Clemente is an enchanting beachside town and an up and coming community all at once. The closer you get to the ocean and Del Mar avenue, the more  you see of  the Ole Hanson style of old San Clemente . The other side of the hill is where the newer housing developments are. The news homes are often built with red tile roofs and stucco exterior, that mimic the look and feel of the older homes closer to the beach.

It doesn’t matter much, though. Everyone who lives in this beautiful beach side community is proud to be a part of it. There is always something going on here in San Clemente, and the San Clemente Villas is positioned in the perfect location to take advantage of all of it.

One of our biggest events each year is the Ocean Festival- Greatest Show on Surf. There is something for people of all ages In the morning there is a pancake breakfast prepared by our city lifeguards and other volunteers. the at beginning at 9:00 am there are different distance runs for children ages 4-12. each ages group gets to compete with their peers. There are Lifeguard Competitions for men and women, Rescue Relays, Ironman competitions and Paddleboard Rescue Relay.

There is also the great  Rubber Ducky  Race and on Sunday, the sand sculpting competition. If you have never been, try to get here, but I warn you it gets crowded, so the earlier you get here, the better your chances of seeing everything.

Throughout the summer, San Clemente also hosts concerts by the beach. On Thursday, July 27: Reggae band Common Sense will be performing as part of the free summer concerts series, from 6pm to sundown just north of the pier.

Family and Friends

The weather is nice and warm, the sun is shining, and the waves are breaking on the shore. I have my health, my family and my extended family. Some days are more trying than others and some days are almost magical. I take the good with the bad and try to always be thankful for the people who surround me and the good things I have. Special Activities at San Clemente Villas

entertainment and fitness at the San Clemente Villas, Aileen Brazeau co-owner of the san clemente Villas

Susie Vanderlip and  myself.  — what a fun morning with her Dance SOS Dance Crew to entertain our residents. so energizing and fun! — at San Clemente Villas by the Sea. Taken from their website:

“SOS Dance Crew is a group of seniors from 60 to 90 years old with amazing spunk, energy, enthusiasm and love of life that share the joy of dance and  FLASH MOBS in the most unexpected and amusing places! Our first FLASH MOB was at a Starbucks, sharing what SOS thinks is the perfect theme song for both Starbucks and the Dance Crew: “That’s the Way (I Like It)!”

Since then, we have performed Flash Mobs at the Aquarium of the Pacific, Irvine Global Village Festival, Albertson’s Grocery Store (garnering 140,000 views on Facebook!) and auditioned for the 2016 Season of America’s Got talent.  We also present high-energy 30 to 45-minute dance programs at senior/assisted living facilities to entertain and uplift the infirm elderly.

SOS Dance Crew was founded by Director and Zumba Gold Instructor, Susie Vanderlip from a class at Custom Bodies Fitness in Irvine, CA.  The SOS Dance Crew is a family of culturally diverse seniors (African-American, Caucasian, Chinese, East Indian,  Japanese, Pilipino, Taiwanese, Latin, and more). We continue to rehearse and hold Zumba Gold class every Tuesday and Thursday mornings 10:30am – 11:30am at Pacific Dance in Irvine, CA. Come join us!

SOS Dance Crew believes that “EVERY BODY can DANCE!” And wish to inspire everyone of all ages to get up off the couch and MOVE!
Do it for your health. Do it for FUN!  Do it to EMBRACE LIFE!”

Myself, and the residents at San Clemente Villas throughly enjoyed their fitness dance routine. It just goes to show that you are never too old to have fun, to dance, and to exercise. These people were of all different ages, men an women. They had a ball and infused us with their enthusiasm!! It was wonderful.

Running, Running and Running

Running my first Half Marathon !!

In the past year and a half or so I have stepped up my fitness quest. I started by joining a weight loss program and walking. Then a short while later,

along with a couple of friends, I decided to join a running club. In February I completed my first ever half marathon! I didn’t decide this out of the blue. I have been running with the club, training with my trainers to build more lean muscle, and this half marathon took some fair bit of training to prepare for.

I am so proud of myself. I never thought I would do something like this. Between the BTF Farms, our San Clemente Villas, and family, I have plenty on my plate already. But I decided in the last couple of years to put my health first and I have kep my committment to myself. It’s much easier for me to keep my commitments to other people tha it so to keep them to myself. I think most people are like that.

I have said this before, and now I will say it again. As the owner-operator of a Senior Living Home, I see first hand the value of good health and strength. We are none of us immune to illness and accidents, but it’s those who have invested in their health who are most apt to recover quickly.

Did you have a resolution to take better care of yourself this year? Are you keeping your resolution? If you’re not, it’s not too late to start. Get up tomorrow with a goal, and each day, recommit to that goal. If you miss a day, it’s not the end of the world. The next day you get up and do it. No excuses.

That’s what I have been trying to do. Some days I manage to stay in the zone, and some days, life gets in the way. But I keep trying.

New Year’s Goals

Aloha RUn long Beach 2016, run for Honor Flight for veterans, Aileen Brazeau runs for charity

We finished and got the medals to prove it

Over the past couple of years I have been much more conscious of how I eat and exercise. Not that I have ever really been very lax with my eating and workouts, but I have been trying to be more proactive. It seems as we age it gets easier to fall into a trap of, oh gosh, I am getting older, I don’t have as much energy as I used to, and to just give up.

From working with so many Seniors in my business at San Clemente Villas, I see the difference between people who give up, and the people who keep on working towards fitness. There is a difference, believe me. Now, don’t get me wrong. Most people can’t do the same level of intensity in their exercise routines as they did in their 20’s, 30’s, 40’s and even 50’s, but you can ALWAYS do something. Walking, working out with weights, swimming and yoga are some things that most of us can do all of our lives. But if even doing those things is too strenuous, then walking in the pool and stretching, and working with very light weights will still help to keep your strength up.

For myself, I have added some 5k’s and participating in a walking group, to my regular training schedule. And food choices which involve more vegetables. Vegetables, it turns out, are better for us than eating too much meat, and they are way better for us than too much processed food.

If you have just one resolution that you keep this year, it should be this, just do a little better than you did last year, at taking care of yourself. Say no to the bad for you choices a little more often. Get out and feel the fresh air on your face, walk around your neighborhood and say hi.

Here’s my hope for all of us in 2017. Take care of yourselves, your loved ones, and be kind to one another.

Thanksgiving is Coming!!

Aileen Brazeau philanthrophist, horse owner, co owner of San Clemente Villas

Thanksgiving Dinner with pumpkins, gourds, asparagus, brussel sprouts, baked vegetables, pie, flowers, and candles.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year!! In fact this is one of my favorite times of the year. The Holidays are upon us and  Thanksgiving is coming up in a couple of weeks, and then Christmas and New Years. Is it just me or does time seem to simply fly by?

Each year Dana Point holds its annual Turkey Trot. In fact this event is now in it’s 39th year!! You have your choice to walk or run, and you can choose to participate in either the 5k or the 10k race. Most of the participants dress up in some kind of costume, or at the very least, a hat that resembles a Turke. Children as young as 5 years old are eligible for the Turkey Trot and it’s just plain old fashioned fun. The added benefit is you get some exercise in before you sit down and eat way more food than you normally would.

I have been doing some running with a local running club. While I am not certain that I will actually be participating in the Turkey Trot this year, I love that the city where I live has such a great event that brings members of our local South Orange County communities together. Entire families run or walk in this event each year as a part of their Thanksgiving Day celebrations.

Happy thanksgiving to all of you!
