The Fight To Cure Alzheimers

Aileen Brazeau member of the San Clemente Chamber of commerce, co-owner of the San Clemente Villas Senior Assisted Living FacilityThis is my personal blog, so I don’t usually post about Alzheimers here. Today, however, I will.

Alzheimer’s and Dementia rob people of who they are, and leave them without the ability to do so many of the things they would love to.At the Villas we have a separate wing we call the West Indies for people who suffer from Alzheimers and dementia. Despite the fact residents in the West Indies have this disease, we have had  good success in keeping people active and as involved as their minds will allow. But it’s just not the same for them as our residents on the other side of the Villas.

I am involved in Alzheimer’s Support groups and I chose to be a part of them for several reasons. One, I want to know what’s going on. Have researchers found any new information on how to prevent or halt the spread of Alzheimers? If they have I want to know.

Two, are there things my staff and I can do right now to help those afflicted with Alz to have a better quality of life. Three, I feel it’s important to be a contributer to ALZ research.

Today, there are breakthroughs happening, but most of them are at odds with long-held theories, and that means a whole new branch of research has to take place in order for a cure to be formulated.

So what can we do to help ourselves? First, take care of our bodies and minds. Keep active, walk, exercise and read. We don’t have to run marathons, walks on the beach, in the park, or just around our neighborhoods will do.

Eat our veggies and fruits. Use some natural oils to help with anxiety and fear. Yoga and meditation are also helpful in keeping our minds and bodies flexible.

Everything we can do to keep cells healthy is a step in the right direction. Most of all, make each and every day the best we can. We never know when things will change, that’s out of our control. But dwelling on the blessings versus the negatives will always keep us happier.
